Uncomfortable and stilt(on)ed, but entertaining. Creative on a topic of humanity's encounters with an incredibly outlandish astrological event, and fun to read, but much like titular object, lacked a firm core. Did I have fun? Yes! That's why it's at three stars. But I felt the act three scenes, emotional and gut wrenching as they were, fell horribly flat with such a rug pull of an ending. I don't regret the read, but I miss the Scalzi endings that had weight. I am glad he had the opportunity to write this so I could deeply appreciate his older books, and discover a new side to an author I have looked up to for over a decade now. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Scalzi, if just for a new experience. For a new reader, start with his Old Man's War series to get to know the author, THEN get this book.

Humorous and well-written. Story lines and characters give the reader a bit of food for thought and much insight into our realities, though the situation couldn't be more unreal.

About the author
